Grapefruit for breakfast
Grapefruit is sometimes thought of as a ‘dieter’s breakfast’. It might make you think of a sour yellow grapefruit half, perhaps sprinkled with a little sugar. But grapefruit – and your taste buds – deserve much more than that.
Baking a grapefruit in the oven, topped with brown sugar and some cinnamon spice, is so much better. The sweetness of the sugar balances the natural tartness of the grapefruit. Baking creates a delicious warm and comforting dish, while still capturing the goodness of grapefruit.
Best variety of grapefruit to use
You can use any variety of grapefruit you like for this dish. However, a red grapefruit such as Ruby Red is best as it has a slightly sweeter taste and less of the bitterness of yellow or white grapefruit.
Simple baked grapefruit ingredients
For this easy baked grapefruit, you’ll need:
- 1 red grapefruit, cut in half
- 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 small sprigs of fresh thyme for garnish

Note: This recipe uses one grapefruit to create 2 serves of half a grapefruit each. To serve 4, simply double the recipe. Or bake as many grapefruit halves as you like at a time with enough brown sugar and cinnamon topping for each. The baking time won’t change.
Method
Preheat oven to 200C (400F).
Line a baking dish or tray with non stick parchment or baking paper.
Using a shape knife, cut the grapefruit in half. Then carefully cut around the grapefruit flesh to separate it from the outside skin. Also gently cut between the grapefruit segments, being careful not to cut too deep and pierce the skin. (Pre-cutting makes the grapefruit much easier to eat once it is cooked.)

Place the grapefruit halves in the baking dish or tray, Top each grapefruit half with a Tablespoon of brown sugar and then sprinkle over 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon on each.
Bake grapefruit in the oven for 20 minutes or until the sugar darkens and caramelises.
Remove grapefruit from the oven. Garnish each grapefruit half with fresh thyme and serve warm. Add a spoonful of vanilla yoghurt if desired.
Serves 2.

Making ahead and storage
Baked grapefruit is best enjoyed freshly cooked from the oven. However, you can bake in advance and store well covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat before serving.
This recipe is not suitable to freeze.
