If you live in Adelaide, South Australia, or are lucky enough to visit, take a moment to discover some of the fantastic street art and murals found throughout the city. Two of our favourites are of course citrus murals. You’ll find these in the East of the CBD on Hutt Street.

About Adelaide city murals and street art

In recent years, the City of Adelaide’s strategic has prioritised increasing public art throughout the city. Arts and cultural grants have allowed more artists to use city walls as canvases for creative murals and art works.

Building owners can commission artists to transform boring walls into something beautiful through Adelaide Art Walls, where you can see amazing examples of artworks already completed. From the sides of car parks and apartment buildings, to city laneways, there are fascinating artworks to discover in many corners of the South Australian capital.

One such artist is Jack Fran, who was commissioned to paint vibrant murals for the Arab Steed Hotel on Hutt Street and the adjoining Hutt Street Cellars retail outlet in 2023. It’s hard to miss these bright citrus themed murals as you drive or walk past.

The northern wall of Adelaide’s Arab Steed Hotel is now a standout in shades of orange-red citrus against brilliant blues. Citrus fruits are appropriate for the hotel and restaurant inside and also add to the vibrancy of Hutt Street, a popular hospitality strip with cafes and restaurants.

The best way to view this mural is from the north side of Giles Street at the Hutt Street end. This way you can see the full length of the artwork down the side of the hotel wall.

Hutt Street Cellars mural

When visiting the Hutt Street Cellars retail store, visitors entre through doors in this bright and cherry yellow mural. It features lemons and grapefruit, against a yellow and white floral patterned background. There are also apples and a cup of coffee as part of this realistic still life.

To appreciate the full mural – which extends the whole front of the building – visit Hutt Street and stand on the Eastern side of the road looking across.
