Jump to RecipeThe best way to make porridge with oats
We all have busy lives and it can be so tempting to grab a packet of microwave oats from the supermarket. I won’t deny that I’ve done that more than once. However, for a truly creamy porridge (oatmeal) that is full of flavour, it really is worth taking the extra few minutes to cook your oats on the stovetop. It still only takes 10 minutes, but I promise it is worth it.
Natural sugars from fruit
The best thing about making your own oats from scratch is that you are totally in control of the sugar. Instant oat porridge packets can be really convenient, especially as you can usually cook them in the microwave in just a couple of minutes. But many pre-flavoured oats are loaded with added sugar.
This recipe for lightly spiced orange and cinnamon oats has just the right amount of sweetness from the orange juice added during cooking and the delicious berry topping.
Which berries go with orange?
You can use any type of berries you like in this recipe. The slightly tart and slightly sweet flavour of berries pairs well with sweet orange. I used some loganberries that I had picked in the summer and then carefully frozen. Blueberries would go perfectly with the orange flavour and blackberries would also work really well. Feel free to experiment with any berries you like or have on hand.
Orange and cinnamon oatmeal ingredients
For delicious spiced orange and cinnamon flavoured porridge you’ll need only a few ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 litre (2.1 pints) milk (or dairy free alternative)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- juice and zest of 1 orange
- 2 cups frozen berries (any type)
- 1 Tablespoon water

Method
Zest the orange into small strips using a zester. Halve and juice the orange.
Place the rolled oats, cinnamon, milk, vanilla extract, orange juice and half of the orange zest into a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring regularly, until the mixture comes to the boil. Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer, stirring often, for around 10 minutes until the oats have thickened.
While the oat mixture is cooking, place the frozen berries and 1 Tablespoon of water in a small saucepan. Heat on medium heat for 3-4 minutes until berries soften.
Spoon the oat mixture into serving bowls and top with berries and extra orange zest for garnish.
This recipe makes 4 serves. If you are want enough for 2, you can simply halve the recipe.
Making oats in advance or storing leftovers
I do think porridge is best made the same day, but if you would like to make it in advance or store individual serves for later you certainly can. Or if you have leftovers, you can store and easily reheat them for breakfast another day.
To store, allow the oats to cool first. Divide cooled mixture into portions in small airtight containers. You can then store the containers in the fridge for 3-4 days or even freeze them for up to 3 months.
When ready to use, reheat in the microwave until hot, stirring well to ensure they are evenly heated. You will need to add a little extra liquid (milk or water) to get the right consistency.
Note that berries and orange zest topping is best added right before serving and not for storage. Otherwise when you reheat and stir your oats they will end up being quite red or purple! Although it will still taste delicious.
